I’m still getting used to this whole blogging thing, so please bear with me. I know I’m kind of all over the place. Blogging is really anxiety inducing for me and I’m learning. I’m still building my audience and that’s quite intimidating. I’m kind of just yelling into the void at the moment.
I was looking through some of my ballet things today and came across the DVD of my favorite ballet of all time, my comfort ballet: The Royal Ballet’s production of “The Winter’s Tale” with Edward Watson as Leontes.
I plan to eventually write a blog post about this ballet later on, but this production means the world to me. It contains the most accurate portrayal of jealousy I have ever seen. It’s the first ballet that ever moved me to tears.
This ballet became a lifeline for me when I was dealing with a toxic environment. When I was screaming for help and no one listened, I would shut myself away and watch this ballet. I would lose myself in this beautiful story of loss and redemption.
I received it years ago as a Christmas gift and I immediately began saving in the hopes that I could see Edward Watson perform live and hopefully get him to sign the cover. When he retired from performing, I figured I missed my chance.
I was so giddy when it was announced he would be coming out of retirement for a limited time this fall for a few performances. It would mean so much to me to see one of my all time favorite dancers perform and possibly even meet him.
That’s part of what’s so amazing about ballet. You can connect to the story that’s being told without a word being spoken. You just sit there and watch and connect with the storyteller on the stage.
