When you watch ballet, you are transported into another world. Usually a magical world filled with danger and adventure, sometimes with a little romance. Sometimes with a giant helping of melodrama. It’s not so much about the character as it is about the story.
But every now and again, there is a character that jumps out and steals the entire show. That steals the entire art form.
And then there’s Carabosse.
Carabosse is the Wicked Fairy from Sleeping Beauty and I love this woman. I strive to be this level of petty. She is so irredeemably evil, but there’s a point to her wickedness. It’s not a good point, but it’s a point. The King and Queen have failed to invite her to their daughter’s christening and have invited all the other fairies.
Carabosse is a fairy queen, a woman of standing. This mistake is a slight. It’s an insult to her position in society. Does she overreact? Absolutely. This bitch shows up to the christening and she makes a scene.
Now, is cursing an infant justified? No, of course not. But that’s what makes her a villain.
When this wicked fairy strides on the stage, with her rats, your eyes go right to her. She commands respect with her confident stride and her side eye that could kill a man. She’s menacing and beautiful and she puts all other villains to shame. She doesn’t give a damn about shallow frivolous pursuits. Her ego has been wounded and she will be avenged.
This is a bitch who takes absolutely no shit.
Not even Disney could redeem her. Carabosse doesn’t want to be redeemed.
The Sleeping Beauty tends to be a favorite among ballet aficionados and newcomers alike. In my opinion, the best part of the ballet is Carabosse. She needs to be seen to be believed.
