Recently it was announced that this season is the last season Gary Avis will dance the role of Tybalt in “Romeo & Juliet”
The Royal Ballet’s “Romeo & Juliet” is a beautiful and moving production. Avis’ Tybalt is one of my favorites to watch. Avis portrays him as a sneering towering figure who is like an older brother to Juliet. He always seems a little older than most of the other players on stage, which makes him seem a little apart from the others. It gives him an interesting aura of authority, but also a bit of a sense of entitlement.
I feel like most people hate him, but I kind of understand him. I don’t agree with his actions, but I can understand the environment that shaped him and ultimately doomed him.
Gary Avis infuses him with pathos and when he’s on stage, you put your hand on your head because you think, “Oh shit. Here comes the hot tempered one to make shit worse. Yep, here comes the swords.”
Avis eats every scene he’s in and you can see how much he enjoys the role from the way he chews the scenery. It’s not as intense a role as Romeo, but it’s still quite a heavy role to take on. So I can see why he has hung up this particular role. Thought I still hope he will continue to dance Lord Capulet. Gary Avis is a wonderful performer and a true delight to see dance.
